Application of raw flesh containing the larvae of the cestode genus Spirometra to the skin can result in cutaneous Sparganosis.
Risk factors:
(1) application of raw flesh from an infected host to a wound as a poultice
(2) handling raw flesh from an infected host with a break in the skin
Clinical features:
(1) tender subcutaneous swelling at the site of flesh contact
(2) migration of the swelling over time
(3) eosinophilia (variable)
(4) presence of a wormlike structure at the time of surgical removal
