Description

Mumps was a common childhood virus prior to the introduction of an effective vaccine.


Type: single-stranded RNA virus

Family: Paramyxovirididae

Genus: Rubulavirus

 

Incubation period: 12-24 days

 

Common clinical findings:

(1) fever

(2) fatigue

(3) malaise

(4) myalgias

(5) headache

(6) salivary gland swelling, most often involving the parotid gland

 

Complications:

(1) orchitis in males, less often oophoritis in females

(2) pancreatitis

(3) myocarditis

(4) encephalitis

(5) fetal complications if it develops during pregnancy

(6) deafness (rare)

(7) laryngeal edema
