Description

Chancroid is one of the genital ulcer diseases (GUD) and a risk factor for HIV infection. It tends to show atypical lesions, involve nongenital sites, and respond slowly to therapy as compared to a patient without HIV.

Cause: Haemophilus ducreyi

Features that may be found in an HIV-positive patient:

(1) multiple ulcerations

(2) ulcers in non-genital sites including the oral cavity, probably due to autoinoculation

(3) ulcers "atypical" for chancroid

(4) slower response to therapy or failure to respond

An HIV-positive patient with chancroid may also have other sexually-transmitted diseases (mixed).

The course and appearance are affected by the patient's immune status, which should be determined and monitored.
