Sarcocystosis may rarely involve the heart.
The patient may:
(1) be asymptomatic
(2) have features of a mild myocarditis
(3) have heart failure
The ECG and echocardiogram may be normal.
Laboratory findings may:
(1) be normal
(1) show eosinophilia
(2) show an elevated CK-MB and/or troponin
Histopathology (from biopsy or autopsy) show sarcocysts within cardiac myocytes. There may be no inflammatory reaction.
The patient often has evidence of sarcocystis elsewhere.
