Campylobacter is an important cause of foodborne gastroenteritis.
Species involved:
(1) C. jejuni
(2) C. coli
(3) C. fetus
(4) C. lari
A significant percentage of patients who are infected and shedding the organism are asymptomatic.
Findings seen in almost all symptomatic patients (>= 90%):
(1) diarrhea (may last several days, usually self-limited)
(2) abdominal pain and cramping
Findings in most symptomatic patients (50 - 89%):
(1) chills and fever >= 38°C
(2) weight loss
(3) bloody diarrhea (in patients <= 15 years old)
Findings in some symptomatic patients:
(1) bloody diarrhea (in patients > 15 years old)
(2) vomiting
