Description

Campylobacter fetus can cause a bacteremia which may range from a transient event to a life-threatening condition.


 

Risk factors for significant bacteremia:

(1) age > 60 years of age

(2) cirrhosis

(3) cancer

(4) immunosuppression

 

Clinical findings in patients with C. fetus bacteremia may include:

(1) transient bacteremia (common in immunocompetent patients)

(2) febrile diarrhea

(3) cellulitis

(4) endovascular infection (endocarditis, indwelling catheter, mycotic aneurysm, infected aneurysm/shunt/bypass, thrombophlebitis, etc)

(5) infection of a medical device (joint prosthesis, pacemaker, vascular shunt, aortic graft, indwelling catheter)

 

Factors associated with a fatal outcome within 30 days:

(1) underlying cancer

(2) fever without other clinical manifestations or identified port of entry
