Description

Biliary sludge is a coarse, mud-like material that has a clinical spectrum which overlaps with that of cholelithiasis.

The sludge may range from a semi-liquid to a relatively firm material. Microscopic exam may show the presence of microlithiasis.

Clinical features:

(1) right upper quadrant pain

(2) variable episodes of acute pancreatitis

(3) visible sludge at the ampulla of Vater

Sludge has a characteristic appearance on ultrasonography.

Gallstones may or may not be present. In the absence of stones it is in the differential diagnosis of acalculous cholecystitis.
