Avellis's syndrome is a rare neurologic syndrome with involvement of the vagus nerve.

X (vagus)

ipsilateral paralysis of the palate, pharynx and vocal cords

 

Clinical features of Avellis's syndrome:

(1) ipsilateral paralysis of vocal cords and palate with loss of gag reflex (vagus nerve, CN X)

(2) contralateral loss of pain and temperature sensation (spinothalamic tract)

(3) preservation of touch and pressure sensation

(4) preservation of function in other cranial nerves

 

Causes may include:

(1) infarct of medulla oblongata

(2) head trauma

(3) mass lesions near the jugular foramen
