Vilazodone is an antidepressant that is toxic following an overdose.
Action: selective serotonin reuptake inhibition and partial 5HT1A agonism
Even a small amount of vilazodone may cause serious toxicity in a child.
Clinical features in overdose:
(1) drowsiness
(2) vomiting
(3) tachycardia
(4) agitation
(5) seizures
(6) serotonin syndrome (with altered mentation, autonomic instability and neuromuscular abnormalities)
Symptoms may last more than 24 hours, so prolonged clinical observation may be indicated.
The clinical picture may be complex if other drugs are included in the overdose.
