Description

Certain clinical findings may be associated with an intracranial teratoma (germinoma) arising in the suprasellar region.


 

The clinical impact of a suprasellar teratoma varies with the tumor’s impact on adjacent structures:

(1) optic nerves

(2) pituitary

(3) hypothalamus

 

Cliinical features of a suprasellar teratoma:

(1) visual disturbances

(2) abnormalities of water metabolism including polydipsia and diabetes insipidus

(3) hypopituitarism with

(3a) growth retardation

(3b) disorders of sexual maturation (precocious puberty, hypogonadism)

(4) abnormalities of thermoregulation

(5) alterations in consciousness

 

An increase in water intake may precede the other symptoms by weeks or months.
