Description

Acute blastomycosis may range from an asymptomatic condition to a life-threatening, fulminant infection.


 

Clinical features of acute pulmonary blastomycosis:

(1) fever with chills

(2) cough

(3) transient pleuritic chest pain

(4) myalgias

(5) arthralgias

(6) pulmonary infiltrate often without hilar lymphadenopathy

 

The clinical picture may be mistaken for influenza or bacterial pneumonia.

 

Extrapulmonary disease may involve:

(1) skin and mucous membranes

(2) bone and joints

(3) genitourinary tract

(4) central nervous system

(5) liver and spleen

(6) lymph nodes

(7) endocrine glands (adrenal glands, thyroid gland, etc)

(8) other organs
