Description

Loder et al reported a clinical classification for patients with Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysitis (SCFE). The authors are from the Children’s Hospital of Michigan, Wayne State University, University of Michigan and Texas Scottish Rite Hospital in Dallas.

Patient selection: slipped capital femoral epiphysitis (SCFE)

Categories for a slipped epiphysis:

(1) stable

(2) unstable

Stable: The patient can bear weight on the leg and can walk, with or without crutches.

Unstable: The patient cannot bear weight on the leg even with crutches due to severe pain.

Patients with stable SCFE tended to have a good outcome.

Patients with unstable SCFE were at risk for a poor outcome, especially avascular necrosis.
