Description

Onychomycosis may be classified based on clinical features.


Type

Features

white superficial (WSO)

superficial white patches on the outer surface of the nail plate, usually with distinct edges

distal and lateral subungual (DLSO)

involves the distal and/or lateral nailbed initially, eventually involves the nail plate

proximal subungual (PSO)

portal of entry is the cuticle and/or ventral aspect of the proximal nail fold, sometimes with paronychia

endonyx

superficial and deep penetration of the nail plate without changes to the nail bed

total dystrophic

complete dystrophy of the nail plate

Mixed

sharing features with more than 1 of the above types

 

Distal and lateral subungual onychomycosis (DLSO) is the most common type.
