Description

A cardiac angiosarcoma is a malignant cardiac tumor which is usually fatal.


 

Clinical features of a cardiac angiosarcoma:

(1) The tumor usually arises in adult men.

(2) The tumor is usually arises in the right atrium, usually near the inferior vena cava.

(3) The patient may have systemic symptoms with fever, weight loss and lassitude.

(4) The patient may present with heart failure, pericardial effusion and/or pleuritic chest pain.

(5) On imaging studies the tumor appears as a broad-based mass.

 

The tumor usually spreads:

(1) locally within the heart

(2) to the epidcardium and pericardium

(3) to the pleura

(4) to the mediastinum

(5) to the lungs

 

Differential diagnosis:

(1) benign cardiac tumors

(2) metastatic tumors to the heart
