Description

As myelofibrosis progresses a number of clinical and laboratory findings may occur. Tracking these changes over time can be helpful in monitoring the course of the disease.

Findings associated with progression of myelofibrosis:

(1) increasing anemia (progessive fall in hemoglobin and hematocrit)

(2) increasing splenomegaly

(3) increasing leukoerythroblastosis in the peripheral blood

(4) increasing abnormalities of red blood cell morphology (anisopoikilocytosis), especially tear drop cells

Some patients will develop acute leukemia, with increasing number of circulating blasts.
