Description

An atrial myxoma may be asymptomatic or associated with a wide number of clinical findings.


 

General clinical findings may include:

(1) breathlessness (dyspnea)

(2) fever

(3) syncope

(4) hemoptysis

(5) cardiac arrest or sudden death

(6) heart murmur (tumor "plop")

(7) weight loss and/or cachexia

 

Clinical findings associated with left atrial myxoma:

(1) stroke

(2) systemic macroemboli

(3) systemic microemboli with skin rash

(4) arthralgias

 

Clinical findings associated with right atrial myxoma:

(1) pulmonary emboli

(2) pulmonary hypertension

(3) clubbing

(4) right-sided heart failure

(5) pleuritis

 

Laboratory findings may include:

(1) anemia

(2) elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) or C-reactive protein (CRP)

(3) elevated acute phase reactants
