Description

Sujan et al listed criteria for the diagnosis of alcoholic hepatitis based on clinical and laboratory findings. The authors are from the University of Alabama, Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico, Vall d'Hebron University, the Mayo Clinic, Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences New Delhi and the University of Pittsburgh.


Patient selection: history of alcohol intake

 

Criteria for alcoholic hepatitis - all of the following:

(1) alcohol intake > 5 years

(1a) males: > 60 g/day

(1b) females: > 40 g/day

(2) last drink within the last 3 weeks

(3) serum total bilirubin > 3 mg/dL

(4) elevated serum transaminases (> 1 and <= 8 times ULN)

(5) AST-to-ALT ratio > 2

(6) exclusion of other diagnoses that can explain the findings better
