Description

Graf developed a quanti-scaling method for evaluating the articulatory defect in patients with a cleft palate. The author is from the State University College at Buffalo, New York.

Method:

(1) The subject was asked to read various test sentences containing 3 consonants.

(2) One group of sentences contain /p/, /t/ and /k/. The second group contain /f/, /s/ and /th/ (where the text for the last consonant shows a t-sigma sign).

Articulation

Points

normal

0

nasal emission, slighting or slight distortion

1

phonemic entity lost due to severe distortion (omission, glottal substitution, velar or pharyngeal articulation, lateral emission, etc.)

2

total score =

= SUM(points for the 3 test consonants) + 1

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 1

• maximum score: 7

• The higher the score the more defective the articulation.

Limitations:

• The inter-rater performance is affected by the experience of the judge and the amount of background noise. Consistent results require selection of raters with equivalent skills and control of the environmental noise.
