Description

Coccidioides immitis may be spread by fomites covered with dust with infectious arthroconidia. This mechanism can result in coccidioidomycosis in a person remote from an endemic region. Carefully cleaning of items can reduce the risk of spread.

Potential items: Indian blankets or textiles, field vehicles, environmental samples

Cleaning tasks:

(1) Wash and sterilize rocks, soils, fossils, vegetation or other sampled materials before removing them from the field to the laboratory.

(2) Keep field vehicles washed. Clean interiors by using water. Do not create dust by sweeping or vacuuming interiors.

(3) Remove dusty clothing after fieldwork and store in closed plastic bags until washed.

(4) Clean field equipment before returning to the home, office or laboratory.

where:

• Vacuums with HEPA filters are available that can be used for cleaning the interior of vehicles and for reducing dust from the outside of clothing.

• Environmental items can be sterilized of C. immitis by heating to 60°C or above for at least 30 minutes. Some items can be washed with fungicide. Problems may be encountered with dyed fabrics or plants.

• Dust masks should be worn while cleaning. When removing dusty clothing, the mask should be the last item removed. A dust mask should be worn when removing bagged clothing for washing.
