Rugge and Genta developed a grading and staging system for gastric biopsies from patients with chronic gastritis. The authors are from the University of Padova in Italy and University of Geneve in Switzerland.
Grading is used to describe the severity of inflammatory lesions.
Staging is used to describe the severity of atrophy with or without intestinal metaplasia.
Parameters:
(1) inflammation in the gastric corpus
(2) inflammation in the antrum
(3) atrophy in the gastric corpus
(4) atrophy in the antrum
