Description

Zargar et al described a classification for the endoscopic appearance of caustic and corrosive mucosal injury of the esophagus and stomach. The authors are from the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research in Chandigarh, India.

Patient selection: corrosive ingestion

Grade

normal

0

hyperemia, edema

1

superficial ulcer, exudate, membrane, blisters, erosions, friability, hemorrhages

2A

deep ulcer, discrete or circumferential

2B

necrosis as small and scattered areas

3A

necrosis, extensive

3B

The grade was associated with outcome. Low grade injuries (Grades 0, 1 and 2a) resolved without sequelae. High grade injuries (Grades 2b, 3a, and 3b) had significant scarring and usually required an endoscopic and/or surgical intervention.
