Yoshioka et al proposed a grading system for changes in the tongue following brachytherapy for localized tongue cancer. The authors are from Osaka University in Japan.
Patient selection: localized tongue cancer treated with brachytherapy.
Exclusion: major tongue resection
The volume index was defined as the number of radioactive needles that were implanted vertically into the tongue.
Clinical Findings
Grade
no major changes
G0
deviation of the tip of the tongue towards the irradiated (weaker) side
G1
hemiatrophy of the half of the tongue that was irradiated
G2
unable to protrude the tongue beyond the incisors
G3
Problems with speech, swallowing, pain or other negative effects tend to increase with increasing grade.
A higher volume index tended to be associated with a higher grade.
