Description

Weinerber et al classified edema of the male genitalia based on the duration of clinical findings. The authors are from the University of Pittsburgh.


 

Duration of edema: weeks to months

 

Usually the swelling is painless.

Clinical Findings

Possible Cause

hematuria

metastatic urothelial carcinoma or renal cell carcinoma

mass on digital rectal exam

metastatic prostate cancer, metastatic rectal carcinoma

testicular mass

testicular carcinoma, sarcoidosis

scrotal mass that feels like "bag of worms", especially while the patient is standing

varicocele

recent change in bowel habits

Crohn's disease, colorectal cancer

inguinal abscesses with sinus tract(s)

hidradenitis suppurativa

bilateral inguinal masses

metastatic carcinoma, sexually transmitted disease, malignant lymphoma

 

where:

• Metastases may be to inguinal lymph nodes, to the penis or to testicular structures.
