Defect
Type
cleft limited to the soft palate
I
median cleft of the hard and soft palate
II
complete unilateral cleft
III
bilateral cleft
IV
Type II: alveolar arch intact; the cleft does not extend beyond the anterior palantine canal
Type III and IV: alveolar arch involved; usually associated with complete cleft of the lip (unilateral in III; bilateral in IV)
Type IV: the vomer is not attached on either side and it hangs free in the middle
