Description

van Praagh and van Praagh reported classification for truncus arteriosus.

Truncus arteriosus communis is a common aortopulmonary trunk. This often arises from a single ventricle.

Features

Type

a single pulmonary trunk arising from the left lateral aspect of the ascending common trunk. This branches into left and right pulmonary arteries.

A1

left and right pulmonary arteries arise separately from the posterolateral aspect of the ascending common trunk

A2

one pulmonary branch arises from the ascending common trunk. The other lung may be supplied by either an artery arising from the aortic arch or by systemic-to-pulmonary arterial collaterals

A3

presence of an interrupted aortic arch with the ascending common trunk dividing into branches with one supplying the head and right upper extremity and the other the remainder.

A4

where:

• Type A1 is the same as Type I of Collet and Edwards.

• Type A2 includes all of Type II and most cases of Type III of Collet and Edwards.

• Type A3 includes the Type II of Collet and Edwards not included in Type A2.

Intrinsic stenosis and/or hypoplasia may be present in either of the pulmonary arteries.
