Description

Tsolakis et al used a classification system to evaluate patients with bile leak after hepatobiliary surgery. This can help to identify a patient who may require more aggressive management. The authors are from the University of Calgary, Uppsala University, University of Ottawa and Alberta Health Services.

A large leak was defined as early extravasation of contrast from the bile duct defect prior to opacification of the intrahepatic bile ducts (Sandha et al, 2004).

Parameters:

(1) size of the leak

(2) location of leak

(3) presence of other biliary pathology on the initial ERCP cholangiogram
