de Franchis and other members of the Baveno VI conference reported a classification system for portal vein thrombosis (PVT). The Baveno VI conference was held in Baveno, Italy.
Patietn selection: occlusion of the portal vein with or without occlusion of other veins (isolated occlusion of superior mesenteric or splenic vein not included)
Parameters:
(1) anatomic site involvement
(2) duration (recent vs chronic
(3) presentation (asymptomatic vs symptomatic)
(3) underlying disease
(4) degree of portal venous system occlusion
(5) extent of portal venous system occlusion (splenic and mesenteric veins)
Anatomic sites:
(1) main trunk
(2) left and right branches

Duration:
(1) recent (R) or acute: hyperdense thrombus, no or few collaterals, no thrombus in previous scan
(2) chronic (Ch): previous diagnosis, collaterals or cavernoma
Underlying disease(s):
(1) cirrhosis (C)
(2) non-cirrhotic liver disease (N)
(3) hepatocellular carcinoma or other local malignancy (H)
(4) post-liver transplant (L)
(5) absence of underlying liver disease (A)
Degree of portal vein occlusion:
(1) nonocclusive (NO) or incomplete (I): Some flow visible.
(2) occlusive (O) or complete (C): No flow visible.
Extent beyond portal vein:
(1) splenic (S)
(2) mesenteric (M)
(3) both (SM)
