Description

The AO-ASIF (Arbeitsgemeinschaft fur Osteosynthesefragen, Association for the Study of Internal Fixation) developed a classification system for fractures, based on location and type of fracture.

Code for location: 23 (radius/ulna, distal)

NOTE: This classification is similar to that for the distal tibia/fibula.

Locations:

(1) extra-articular fracture (A)

(2) partial articular fracture of the radius (B)

(3) complete articular fracture of the radius (C)

Extra-Articular Fracture

Type of Fracture

Fracture Code

extra-articular fracture of the ulna, radius intact

styloid process

A1.1

metaphyseal simple

A1.2

metaphyseal multi-fragmentary

A1.3

extra-articular fracture of the radius, simple and impacted

without any tilt

A2.1

with dorsal tilt (Pouteau-Colles)

A2.2

with volar tilt (Goyrand-Smith)

A2.3

extra-articular fracture of the radius, multi-fragmentary

impacted with axial shortening

A3.1

with a wedge

A3.2

complex

A3.3

Partial Articular Fracture of the Radius

Type of Fracture

Fracture Code

partial articular fracture of the radius, sagittal

lateral simple

B1.1

lateral multi-fragmentary

B1.2

medial

B1.3

partial articular fracture of the radius, dorsal rim (Barton)

simple

B2.1

with lateral sagittal fracture

B2.2

with dorsal dislocation of the carpus

B2.3

partial articular fracture of the radius, volar rim (reverse Barton, Goyrand Smith II)

simple with a small fragment

B3.1

simple, with a large fragment

B3.2

multi-fragmentary

B3.3

Complete Articular Fracture of the Radius

Type of Fracture

postero-medial articular fracture

C1.1

sagittal articular fracture line

C1.2

frontal articular fracture line

C1.3

complete articular fracture of the radius, articular simple, metaphyseal multi-fragmentary

sagittal articular fracture line

C2.1

frontal articular fracture line

C2.2

extending into the diaphysis
