Description

The AO-ASIF (Arbeitsgemeinschaft fur Osteosynthesefragen, Association for the Study of Internal Fixation) developed a classification system for fractures, based on location and type of fracture.

Code for location: 33 (femur, distal)

Locations:

(1) extra-articular fracture (A)

(2) partial articular fracture (B)

(3) complete articular fracture (C)

Extra-articular Fracture

Type of Fracture

Fracture Code

simple

apophyseal

A1.1

metaphyseal oblique or spiral

A1.2

metaphyseal transverse

A1.3

metaphyseal wedge

intact

A2.1

fragmented, lateral

A2.2

fragmented, medial

A2.3

metaphyseal complex

with an intermediate split segment

A3.1

irregular, limited to the metaphysis

A3.2

irregular, extending into the diaphysis

A3.3
