Description

Talipes, also known as clubfoot, indicates a congenital deformity of the foot causing the foot to be twisted in shape or position. Different terms are used to describe the different types of deformity.


 

Terms in the sagittal plane:

(1) equinus: toes on the ground, plantar surface at an angle to the ground, and the heel raised

(2) calcaneus: heel on the ground, plantar surface at an angle to the ground, and the toes raised.

(3) cavus: the arch of the foot is elevated, with toes and heel on the ground

 

Terms in the frontal plane:

(1) varus: lateral plantar surface of foot in contact with surface, with medial plantar surface raised, with the heel pointing inward

(2) valgus: medial plantar surface of foot in contact with surface, with lateral plantar surface raised, with the heel pointing outward

 

Terms used:

(1) equinus

(2) equinovarus: equinus + varus

(3) equinvalgus: equinus + valgus

(4) calcaneus

(5) calcaneovarus: calcaneus + varus

(6) calcaneovalgus: calcaneus + valgus

(7) cavus

(8) cavovarus: cavus + varus

(9) cavovalgus: cavus + valgus

(10) varus

(11) valgus
