Classification of Stuart and Hanssen for a Fracture in the Tibia Adjacent to a Knee Prosthesis (Mayo Classification)

Stuart and Hanssen described tibial fractures occurring adjacent to a total knee prosthesis. The authors are from the Mayo Clinic.

Parameters determining the fracture type:

(1) anatomic location of the tibial fracture

(2) subcategory

cephalad end of fracture passes through the tibial plateau	I
transverse fracture adjacent to the stem of the prosthesis (in metaphysis or proximal diaphysis)	II
transverse or oblique fracture distal to the prosthesis	III
