Stuart and Hanssen described tibial fractures occurring adjacent to a total knee prosthesis. The authors are from the Mayo Clinic.

Parameters determining the fracture type:

(1) anatomic location of the tibial fracture

(2) subcategory

Type

cephalad end of fracture passes through the tibial plateau

I

transverse fracture adjacent to the stem of the prosthesis (in metaphysis or proximal diaphysis)

II

transverse or oblique fracture distal to the prosthesis

III

fracture through the tibial tubercle

IV

Subcategory

Code
