Shankaran et al developed a classification scheme for describing the sonographic appearance of periventricular-intraventricular hemorrhage in a neonate. The authors are from Wayne State University and Children's Hospital of Michigan.
Sonographic Findings
Severity of Hemorrhage
hemorrhage confined to subependyml periventricular region AND/OR normal-sized lateral ventricle with a small amount of blood
mild
enlarged lateral ventricules with an intermediate amount of blood
moderate
entire lateral ventricle filled with blood, forming a cast AND/OR extension of hemorrhage into the cerebrum
severe
