Schmidt and Hackenbroch proposed a classification system for heterotopic ossification adjacent to the hip joint. This can help aid the surgeon in determining the optimum surgical approach for removal of the mass.
Features of the classification:
(1) anatomic location
(2) extent of disease
Anatomic Location |
Region |
entirely below the tip of the greater trochanter |
I |
above and below the tip of the greater trochanter |
II |
entirely above the tip of the greater trochanter |
III |
Extent of Disease |
Grade |
single lesion < 10 mm in maximal diameter without contact to the femur or pelvis |
A |
multiple lesions with maximum diameter < 10 mm without contact to the femur or pelvis |
A |
lesion >= 10 mm in maximum diameter with or without contact with femur AND no contact with pelvis AND no ankylosis |
B |
joint ankylosis with bony bridging from the femur to the pelvis |
C |
The patient's lesion is described by both the region and grade of the heterotopic ossification.
