Residual tumor in a patient may be designated with an R code.

none (completely resected)

microscopic residual tumor

macroscopic residual tumor
R2
Determination of R status:
(1) examination of the margins of a tumor resection
(2) imaging or other studies to detect local or distant spread
The minimum distance between the surgical margin and tumor may also be informative, depending on the tumor. A distance greater than 0 but 1 mm may result in more aggressive management than an R0 tumor with a greater rim of normal tissue.
