Parvizi et al classified periprosthetic joint infections (PJI) based on the time and nature of the presentation relative to the original surgery. The authors are from Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia.

where:

• Staphylococcus aureus would be an example of a high virulence bacteria.

• Transient bacteremia with a low virulence bacteria could present as a late PJI.
