Classification of Morgen and Superina for Congenital Extrahepatic Portosystemic Shunt (Abernathy Malformation)

Morgen and Superina reported a classification system for congenital extrahepatic portosystemic shunt (Abernathy malformation, CEPSh).

The Abernathy malformation is a congenital diversion of portal blood away from the liver. This may be due to either:

(1) side-to-side shunt

(2) end-to-side shunt.

It may be associated with additional congenital malformations.

Parameters:

(1) status of intrahepatic portal veins

(2) drainage of superior mesenteric and splenic veins into the inferior vena cava (IVC)

Intrahepatic Portal Vein	Drainage of SMV and SV into IVC	Type
absent	drain separately into IVC	Ia
absent	merge into common trunk that drains into IVC	Ib
some patent	important collaterals result in shunting	II
