Description

Lenke et al reported a classification for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. Characterizing the features of a patient's scoliosis aids in treatment planning. The authors are from Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University in St. Louis.

Patient selection: adolescent idiopathic scoliosis

Parameters:

(1) proximal thoracic curve pattern

(2) main thoracic curve pattern

(3) distal thorax and lumbar (thoracolumbar-lumbar) curve pattern

A structural curve pattern has one or both of the following:

(1) a Cobb angle >= 25 degrees on side-bending radiographs

(2) kyphosis of at least 20 degrees

(2a) for proximal thoracic: between second and fifth thoracic level

(2b) for main thoracic:between tenth thoracic and second lumbar

(2c) for thoracolumbar/lumbar: between tenth thoracic and second lumbar
