Description

Intestinal intussusception can be classified based on the involved segments of bowel.


Term

Meaning

intussusceptum

bowel that has migrated into the intussuscipiens

intussuscipiens

bowel segment into which the migrating bowel enters (outer bowel envelope)

entering bowel

migrating bowel proximal to the intussusception

 

Enteric or enteroenteric refers to involvement of the small intestine only.

 

Types (first part = intussusceptum, second part = intussuscipiens):

(1) jejunojejunal

(2) ileoileal

(3) ileocecal (ileocecocolic, prolapse of ileocecal valve into cecum)

(4) ileocolic

(5) cecocolic

(6) colocolic

(7) colorectal

• In theory there could be a jejunoileal type as well.
