Holzheimer reported a classification system for inguinal hernias. The author is from Munich, Germany.
Parameters for classifying an inguinal hernia:
(1) type of hernia
(2) subclassification for indirect and direct inguinal hernias
(3) primary vs recurrent
Type of Inguinal Hernia
scrotal or giant
Subclassification for Types A and B
posterior floor defect
posterior flood defect plus defect in the anterior part of the inguinal canal
A combined hernia (more than one type) is described by separately specifying the parameters for each of its components according to the above system.
