Hasselmann et al reported a classification scheme for an incisional complication after surgery. The authors are from Skane University Hospital and Lund University Hospital in Sweden.


Patient selection: surgical incision.

minor incision problems treated as an outpatient

results in prolonged hospital stay (>= 2 times the median duration of hospitalization for a comparable surgery)

readmission with nonoperative management (negative-pressure wound therapy, other)

readmission with revision of the surgical site

severe complication (ICU stay required, major amputation, other)

5

death due to incision complication

The grade correlated with the ASEPSIS score.
