Description

Gray and Skandalakis reported a classification of duodenal atresia. This usually presents in neonates or young infants.

Type I

diaphragm or membrane formed between mucosa and submucosa; less often the lumen may show a plug

most common form; may have delayed presentation

Type II

2 segments of duodenum (proximal in continuity with stomach; distal in continuity with jejunum) end blindly but are connected by a fibrous cord

mesentery to the 2 segments continuous

Type III

as for Type II except no fibrous cord between the 2 segments

mesentery to the 2 segments separated/interrupted
