Description

Goutallier et al reported a grading classification for fatty degeneration of skeletal muscle in patients with torn rotator cuffs. The authors are from Hopital Henry Mondor and the University of Paris.

Findings on Imaging Studies

Stage

completely normal skeletal muscle without fat

0

muscle with a few fatty streaks

1

some fat present but less than the amount of muscle present

2

as much fat as muscle

3

more fat than muscle

4

 

Fatty infiltration Stage 2 or higher is considered pathologic.

 

The fatty degeneration is induced by cuff tears and is associated with functional impairment.
