Description

Fukunaga et al evaluated the response in patients with cholinergic urticaria to skin tests using autologous fluids. This can help to classify a patient into one of 2 major groups. The authors are from Kobe University.

Patients with cholinergic urticaria will show an increase in plasma histamine after an exercise challenge.

Autologous fluids used for skin testing:

(1) diluted sweat

(2) serum

Response to Sweat

Response to Serum

Subtype

strong

negative

nonfollicular

weak

positive

follicular

where:

• The eruption in the follicular subtype involves the hair follicles.

• The increase in plasma histamine is greater with the nonfollicular subtype.
