Eyres et al reported a classification for fractures of the coracoid process of the scapula. The type of fracture correlates with management. The authors are the Northern General Hospital in Sheffield, England.
Fracture Location for the Coracoid Process
Type
fracture at the tip or at the epiphysis
I
fracture through the midprocess
II
fracture through the anatomic base of the process
III
extension of the fracture to involve the superior body of the scapula without involvement of the glenoid fossa
IV
extension of the fracture to involve the superior body of the scapula with involvement of the glenoid fossa
V
where:
• Types I to III are used by traction forces from the attached tendons or ligaments.
• Types IV and V fractures are more severe and probably result from shearing forces.
Associated Injury
Subtype
