Description

Elting et al classified bacteremia in patients with cancer and neutropenia into 2 groups. These correlate with outcome and response to therapy. The authors are from the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

Types of bacteremia:

(1) simple

(2) complex

Features of complex bacteremia - presence of bacteremia with any of the following:

(2) soft tissue infection (abscess, cellulitis, surgical site infection) > 5 cm in diameter

(3) necrotizing soft tissue infection of any size

Features of simple bacteremia - bacteremia not meeting the criteria for complex:

(1) non-necrotizing soft tissue infections <= 5 cm in diameter

(2) limited phlebitis

(3) cystitis or bacteriuria

(4) otitis

(5) nonsuppurative pharyngitis
