Description

The dietary management of phenylketonuria involves restriction of protein intake with supplements to provide amino acids, minerals and vitamins. These diets can be expensive and difficult for patients to adhere to. A patient's diet can be classified based on protein restriction and dietary supplements.

(1) adequate

(2) marginal

A patient on a relaxed or untrestricted diet who does not have adequate supplement intake:

(1) may have a blood phenylalanine concentration that is too high

(2) may be at risk for vitamin deficiencies, especially vitamin B12 and B6
