Description

A fracture of the tooth can be classified based on the anatomic extent of the injury. This will determine what management is required for the injury.

subluxation (partial dislocation)

tooth moved within the alveolar bone

V

avulsion (complete removal from the alveolus)

 

VI

 

 

Class

Management

I

Smoothing of sharp edges and/or bonding tooth colored material to the chipped surface.

II

Usually requires a filling.

III

Endodontic root canal with post and crown.

IV

Extract the tooth.

V

Replace tooth to its original position and splint for 2-3 weeks. If the periodontal support is lost, then extract.

VI

Reimplantation if possible.
