Bronchiectasis can be classified based on its gross appearance.
Bronchiectasis is defined as permanent dilatation of a bronchus. This may arise from destruction of bronchial wall structures and/or retraction by peribronchial fibrosis.

uniform, cylindrical or tubular
tubular
focal constrictions along the length of the bronchus, alternating with areas of dilatation along the affected bronchus
varicose
progressive dilatation with distal saccular or cystic areas, sometimes in clusters
saccular or cystic
where:
• The presence of clusters of cystic areas indicates severe bronchiectasis.
