Description

A ventricular assist device (VAD) may become infected. Aslam et al classified the types of infections that may occur. The authors are from Baylor College of Medicine, St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital and the DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Houston.


Clinical Findings

Type

purulent drainage from the driveline exit site AND isolation of >= 1 pathogen

driveline infection

fluid collection around the ventricular pump AND isolation of >= 1 pathogen

pocket infection

(isolation of the same organism from >= 2 blood cultures AND from the driveline exit site) OR (isolation of the same organism from >= 2 blood cultures AND from the VAD pocket) OR (isolation of the same organism from >= 2 blood cultures AND exclusion of other sites as the source)

bloodstream infection

bloodstream infection AND >= 1 embolic events

endocarditis
