Description

Aine et al developed a grading system for dental erosions in children with gastroesophageal reflux disease. This can be used for both primary and permanent teeth. The authors are from the University Hospital of Tampere in Finland.


 

Changes in Teeth

Grade

normal (no erosions)

0

mild opacities, white spots, etched appearance

1

punched-out holes along occlusal surfaces, incisal edges thinned, cusps flattened

2

dentin exposed at the bottom of the punched-out holes along the occlusal surfaces; dentin exposed on other surfaces

3

 

A child with high grade changes will require more aggressive management to prevent long-term sequelae.
